You have already took part in Auschwitz Tour from Krakow?

While visiting Krakow it’s impossible to miss the magical and bohemian Jewish district of Kazimierz. It is called after its founder, King Casimir the Great (Kazimierz Wielki), who founded it as a separate town in 1335 and it’s best known for being home to a Jewish community the WW2. In the end of the 18th century it lost its status as a separate town and became a district of Krakow, but the richness of synagogues and Jewish cemeteries formed its character. And it’s because of its Jewish heritage that Kazimierz flourishes so much nowadays.

The character of this district changed dramatically with the WW2 when the occupying Nazis forced the Jewish citizens to live in horryfing conditions within the ghetto, established just outside of original Kazimierz in Podgorze district. As a result of the Holocaust 70% of the residents of Kazimierz were killed during the liquidation of the ghetto or in the death camps.

Walking around the district, you can recognize spots in which certain scenes from Steven Spielberg’s „Schindler’s List” were filmed, and among them the renowned enamel factory. Oskar Schindler was an opportunistic entrepreneur who owned a factory in Krakow where he manufactured enamelware for the German army. He used Jews as his workforce. But as the war progressed and he witnessed the horrifying visions of the Holocaust, his motivations switched from  profit to empathy and he transformed his factory into an asylum for Jews. Schindler  managed to keep them alive and save them from death.

After the war, Kazimierz became a backwater area with a reputation for being very dangerous. However, it is now undergoing a major renaissance, with a popular annual Jewish Cultural Festival re-introducing the Jewish culture both to locals and to tourists. Many important historic sites have been restored and innumerable Jewish-themed restaurants, bars, bookstores and souvenir shops are adding to the charm of Kazimierz.
