The Jasna Gora Monastery in Czestochowa north of Krakow is a Pauline Fathers monastery, the holiest place in Poland and one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the world. Polish culture have always been strongly connected to Catholic religion and the pilgrimages to this very symbolical place started over 400 years ago. Every year several million people come to pray in front of a miraculous icon of the Mother of God with the Christ Child ‚Black Madonna’. Many of them travel very long distances on foot.

For ages Poles have believed that St. Luke the Evangelist himself painted the divine icon on a tabletop once used by the Holy Family. It is credited with many, many miracles, for example with saving the Jasna Gora from the Swedish invasion in the 17th century. Over the centuries a huge number of worshippers have had their prayers heard and, grateful, left many votive offerings.
